November 24, 2006 , Day 38
Friends,
Good evening to everyone. I guess technically it is good morning. I feel like we really made some progress today. It was a busy day.
First, I had a couple sets of visitors. Of course the visitors came at the same time as we started a jigsaw puzzle, and coincided with the arrival of the Physical Therapist and the Nutritionist and the CNA, so we decided to charge admission to my room as a TNT fundraiser. That didn't really work out. We would like to thank our visitors. It is so helpful to the process, especially when I am struggling so hard.
The Physical Therapist worked me real hard. I got about 3/4 the way around the atrium, a vast improvement over yesterday, and very encouraging.
One of the nutritionists came to see what I wanted to eat. When he finally understood my dietary needs, he announced that the hospital has a pureed food diet. He went to get a menu. He came back a few minutes later with the announcement that I can't eat any of their pureed food diet. I guess it all has milk in it. So we are pretty stuck on pureed soups and things. Now the kitchen here loves to dump leftovers into the soup, so they take yesterday's desiccated turkey slices and put them into the perfectly good soup before they puree it. Then I get perfectly good soup with small chunks of inedible turkey. Not very appetizing. They did that with the beef soup tonight too. Yuck! I still can't chew, although I am going to experiment with that tomorrow a little bit. Anyway, this is all hiding the point. They took me OFF intravenous feeding today!!!!!!!!! That means I have to eat and drink everything by myself. If the food is not too disgusting, and I am successful, that also means I get to go home that much sooner. This indicates real strong progress in my mind toward getting home. Of course, the other requirement is that I swallow my meds, and I have been doing that for several days now.
I have been having real trouble sleeping at night. I talked to the doctor today about that, and they agreed to give me some chemical help. In fact I just got it, so hopefully I will be fading to oblivion fast.
Blood levels continue to float in the same area. No transfusions today. Platelets went up a little more.
